Gray Blending: A Low-Maintenance, Soft-Growout Solution

Who doesn’t want less maintenance, fewer salon visits, and healthier hair? Gray blending offers a softer, more natural transition by blending, rather than fully covering, gray hair. Instead of permanent color, we used highlights, lowlights, and toners—allowing her natural roots to shine through!

✨ The Process: Every transition is unique, so a consultation is required before booking. For this client, her fragile hair meant a careful, multi-session approach with regular Milbon professional treatments and trims. We are utilizing @milbonusa for home hair care- repair primer for fine hair and the weekly boosters. We lifted her mid-lengths and ends as much as possible while maintaining hair health, stopping once we saw early signs of stress.

SPEND 3 HOURS WITH ME..Here’s how I approached this transformation 🤩

Starting canvas- previous highlights and 3 months of level 3 regrowth. Utilizing high lift color to create a copper base allowing the darker pink tones to adhere to. Pulled a new formulation of highlift on ends to soften banding and to tone the previous work. Here’s the formula break down:

Root formula: (20ml) HL/BL, (40ml) HL/M, (120ml) 40 vol
End formula: (20ml) HL/B, (40ml) HL/V, (120ml) 30 vol

After rinsing and applying @k18hair , we used @pulpriothair custom pink shades at the base and neon pinks at the ends. A touch of @milbonusa wave cream and mousse, and air dry for a perfect finish!

ENHANCED BLONDING: Starting with a #highlight refresh. Rinse and add a custom power toner to create the softest opalescent #customhaircolor finish with a good clean up #haircut and #blowout

SIMPLIFY THE FORMULATION:
Highlights 10vol and silk lift strong from @goldwellus
Tone: (15g) 8bv (25g) 10p with cool violet and cool pink pure pigments- process 20 min for full deposit of tone 😊

Starting with the Basics:
🔹 Understand Your Canvas: Know your current hair status and desired result. What steps and tools will ensure longevity, consistency, and full coverage? Consider whether to swell or constrict the hair fiber, lift or deposit color—each decision is crucial.

Mastering Color Theory:
🔹 Level vs. Tone: Determine how light or dark to go. Understand the interplay between light reflection and tonality. What pigments fill white hairs, and how do they affect pigmented hair? Develop multiple formulations with purpose.

TONER REFRESH WITH A #BLOWOUT. Enhance, neutralize or deepen the tone of your #haircolor. Add shine, softness and reflection to faded and dull locks. Maintain the longevity of your color between visits!

THE #CORRECTIVEHAIRCOLOR PROCESS 🧠🧐

Step 1- Remove pink dye using @goldwellus Top Chic Zero Ammonia Clear mixed at a 1:1 ratio with 20 volume developer. Malibu CPR was used on the ends to eliminate oxidative dye buildup on ends.

Step 2- the pink dye was successfully removed, revealing a clean level 8/9 at the roots with some remaining level 6/7 brown banding. To address lighter roots, the roots were filled with MILBON Sophistone Demi 2p-8GC, 1p 6GC, and a dash of 6N. Large freehand balayage sections were applied to mid strands using Milbon clay lightener with 30 volume developer for 20 minutes to shift the banding and full deposit of the filler formula. This left a much easier canvas to balance out.

Step 3- I had previously done swatches to determine my final formulation. Applying the root color using MILBON Sophistone Permanent. 6C, 6NBR, and 5N with 10 volume developer was utilized to DEPOSIT color at the roots. I don’t usually advise pulling permanent color through the ends BUT in this case I opted for Permanent color through the ends as the higher alkalinity assisted in shifting any residual banding on the ends. I incorporated k18 during this process to maintain the strength of hair. The end formula of 8G, 7C, and a dash of 6NBR with 30 volume developer was applied to ensure vibrancy, depth and longevity.

Step 4 included a flash tone using 9cr for approximately 8 minutes with MILBON Sophistone Demi to layer enhancing pigment, add shine, and softness to the hair. This process ensures longevity in corrective color services!

Following these steps, the hair was blow-dried and cut if necessary. A mandatory follow-up a few days later to assess if any adjustments are needed. At her next visit, I will reevaluate and reformulate to address any changes she wishes to see or continue customizing her #haircolor
